I get alot of daily newsletter things on various subjects; cretivity, beading, fiberarts, polymerclay, spirituality, befief systems, etc. One of my favorites is Spiritcloth. Jude Hill is consistent in her contributions and I find her an amazing person, one who Ii would like to be when I grow up, only I am sure I am older than she so that isn't likely.
Her work is unique, nothing else is like it. I find it inspiring consistentlly and bet you will too.

Well it was a lot of fun. I am not completely happy with it because I need more practice in making the copper wire beads. I like the polymer clay beads,( barrels, drums, lentils), and the fabric beads came out nice too. But the copper wire beads? For one thing I've had the wire forever and do not know the gauge. I may have had better luck with a slightly smaller gauge. Oh yeah, I am going to try again. The idea came from a design by Cyndi Lavin, Jewelry Crafts Magazine, March/April 2007. I made a slew of changes. the original used hand painted satin cord, I used a simple dark cotton cord. the original beads used were purchased ceramic rather than polymer clay. If Cyndi recognizes it I doubt if she'd want to claim it!! But who knows?

I've been making beads every chance I get. Polymer clay beads in brown and gold and copper in shapes as varied as drum, lentil and coin. Small round and cube PC beads in pastels and multi-colors. Fabric beads of small cheetah print, paper beads in deep reds, rose, mauve and varied greens, copper wire beads ( a first, I need more practice). What fun! I'm in the finishing stages, coats of sealer, trimming, filing, shaping.The brown and metallic beads, copper beads, and fabric beads are for a neck piece that is to have an African flavor. (Stay tuned!)

Berry Patch Bracelet

Blackberry patch bracelet to go with necklace. It is interwoven brier vines with ripe and partially ripe berries, and a few berry vine leaves. It attaches with a berry red button and viney loop-. I love this berry stuff. Still have earrings and a ring to work on.
What will I do after berries? Hmm, I've been pulled back again to beachy things. Maybe pearls, seas colored seed beads, shells, polymer sea life? will it be jewelry? Or maybe a wall hanging or table piece .....so many ways to go. Stay tuned.

Magical Monday:

Drove to the coast to the Indian village to take a friend some canning jars and lids etc. It was a great day for the ride. It is only 70 miles but takes over two hours as the roads are narrow winding and precarious. When leaving the village to drive back there is a road sign that reads, slides and washouts the next 35 miles and it isn’t kidding!

I wanted to see the ocean beach and visit some of the inlets on the straits to take pictures and just soak the seasonal changes into my being. I didn’t realize until visiting with Lila briefly that her late daughter Kim would have turned 55 yesterday. We visited her grave on the way back. The graveyard has the usual crosses but also totems and Orca carvings, glass globes and plastic flowers. It feels peaceful there, but still alive as well. An interesting aura.

It was sunny but misty from time to time and a huge rainbow arced over the ocean and ended in the village, visible just as we drove over the ridge into town. Welcoming. I was a northwest native in another life and driving into Neah Bay always reminds me of returning home.

It was a magical day to start out my week.

I have some of my berry beaded jewelry ready to post;
I really admire the jewelry artist, author, beader Laura McCabe. She developed interesting necklace designs based on wild weeds that commonly grow in her home area,New England. her work started me thinking about what common weeds growing wild in my native area, northwest Washington would lend themselves to beaded necklace designs.
My favorite, wild blackberries came to mind first. I remember Br'er Rabbit outfoxing Br'er Fox by crying "Don't throw me in the brier patch, do anything, anything, but don't throw me in that brier patch." Of course that is exactly what Fox would do, and Rabbit would be home!
In late summer we would go on wild blackberry picking excursions, I would have a small pail which I was expected to fill before I could go exploring. I loved those sweet summer days, The warm cedar scent in the air, the mysterious animal tracks and sometimes droppings. Mom warning me to stay close, as bears loved berries too (along with wandering kids).We pinicked all around a huge patch of berries one day to see bear wandering up the hill away from us. He had picked his way around the opposite side of the patch as we circled around unknowingly. No problem, there was plenty enough for us all. Guess he wasn't in
a mood for kids!

A real joy to make after many months of being "off clay" due to being a couch potato. yes, I can do a lot of clay work right here but getting a stock of it pre-conditioned made the whole process difficult. So mostly I beaded.
Next I'll dhow you some of the results of that.
Presently I have more polymer clay critters to finish with protectant and buff.
And in the beading category I am jouyously creating a blackberry bramble necklace complete with berry clusters both ripe, semi-ripe and green. What fun!

This was so fun to make.

Started with a length of ribbon a little longer than the circumference of my wrist.

This is an embroidered ribbon, looks like it was made on an embroidery type sewing machine, inexpensive, a little over a dollar for a roll. You can buy the whole thing with no need to have it measured.

I used seed beads in a mix of greens, and pinks mostly size 11s, Then i added glass leaves and blossoms in pink and green as well. A loop on one end will fit over one of three blossoms on the opposite end giving you a closure to fit three sizes. A couple of hours on three evenings and it was done.

I love spring and have been celebrating it's inevitable entry into this year since, well, last year, solstice!!

Tthe library wall contains the craft books on painting (water color, acrylic, pastels, colored pencils, mixed media, assemblage); beads and bead making,

paper beds, bead crochet, seed beads bead embroidery, beads and fiber etc then polymer clay: probably 30 books on all the ways to work with polymer clay, last but not least: art quiting and mixed media to help me to experiment in combining these favorite arts and coming up with some things special. There are stacks of many years worth of specialty magazines and journals: Bead and Button, Bead Unique, Art Quilts, Belle Armoire, Art Dolls, Jewelry Ar t, Cloth Paper Scissors and more. Files of directions and patterns saved from the Internet, And on lower shelves: papers of all kinds: copy paper, construction paper, scrap book paper, rice paper, lace paper, tracing paper, cover paper, handmade paper, home made paper, tissue, crepe paper, foils, freezer paper, delli paper, parchment paper, wrapping paper,saved dryer sheets, recycled coffee filters, and napkins. I could go look and see what I'm forgetting, but you've got the idea, right?

This is the 4x8 work table, the polymer clay half. the other end holds the matt cutter. There is a tool drawer on the left end and on the other end is a wide shelf that holds large sheets of matting and watercolor paper.

Bless husband Bill for doing such a great job of thinking this out and building it.

Two Tales

Mr. Williams, a Native American carver sat on a busy corner in downtown Seattle appearing oblivious to traffic and passersby. He was absorbed in the beautiful piece of Madrona he was carving, as close to happy as he'd been in years. The knife, a gift from his uncle on the celebration of his 14th year.The wood cost him half a bottle of Thunderbird. It is beautiful and he knows it was worth it.
A patrolman noticing Williams became concerned as the corner would soon be even busier.
"Hey buddy, what ya working on?" Williams looked up. Was someone talking to him? sometimes focusing was not easy, did he take his meds?
The patrolman puts a hand on his shoulder and helps him up.He walks him to a nearby corner and points down the way at the entrance to a park. Tells him about shade and benches. He helps him put the knife in it's sheath and the wood and knife in his backpack.
Williams does smile now, as he heads down the block.
He feels good. He made a new friend.

Instead:
A patrolman sees a man "brandishing" a knife as he sits on a busy downtown corner.
The cop identifies himself and pulls his revolver. " drop that weapon!'
Williams looks up. someone is yelling. Is he looking at him?
"Drop that weapon.
Williams looks at his carving knife. Does he mean this?
He turns to ask him a question, to ask if he means his tool, his carver? But his brain exp;odes into red rockets falling into black embers then black only.
Mr Williams is gone.
He never knew why.

Have completed about a dozen spiral beads/cabochons all different, of polymer clay in lavenders, aqua, and black and designed 5 of them into a piece I'm presently beading.
Some of the others will be completed in a more simple form in order to have some done by the end of the month.
Oh my goodness it is great to be crafting again.

Some ways of becoming balanced by honoring Air in my life are obvious and essential. Using the nebulizer and inhalers, practicing the lung exercises, getting well.
But I can do more. Yogic breathing, a daily practice sounds like a promising start.
Then to tend to my neglected accouterments ....take down and untangle the wind chimes. Some may need repair and some may need replaced.....but they all need. Then there's the wind sock.
Above the pond a typical Chinese Koi wind sock. Orange nylon, black permanent marker, a small hoop for the open mouth. Should be fun to make and hang.
It's a start!

Momma Moon

Not full faced and fertile, but shyly hiding an eye, she found that small area between the edge of the blind and the back of the couch and winked at me.
I smiled and wondered what message she might have for me. I awoke with the question still in mind and determined that Moon certainly had a message and it was very basic. I was ignoring something elemental and important.
Fire, Water, Earth and Air. Of the signs I was born to Fire and it predominates my personality and lifestyle. Water has been an influence and constant source of comfort and pleasure as I seek it and honor it in many ways.
Earth is another given considering my mountain roots and love of growth and soil.
I am left with Air. (Or maybe not?) I think Moon told me I am unbalanced in my Elements as I have not paid enough attention to Air.
The next year starting June first, I will devote to the honor and study of Air as a guiding element. I expect and improvement in breathing and lung function to occur as a result.
Moon said: "Seek balance."

spiraling into health

Hello again. Can't get back to the art table yet, busy with the tedium of recuperation.

Thinking of symbols and guides.
My symbol is a spiral, and it is permeating my recovery. It started when I began collecting visuals for art projects, beginning with nature: fern fronds, nautilus, ammonites, Sheep horn, it grew into black holes, galaxies, fractal flames, DNA, interlocking life spirals.

In my half sleep I saw spirals of light and color, all color without beginning or end moving in and out of each other, permeating, becoming one in space and time then gracefully separating and interconnecting somewhere else, growing, becoming more and greater, seeking and finding change while remaining in truth the same.

Are our lives like this? Is this how different worlds live and move together just outside our consciousness?
Are the multi-universes connected in an interplay of spiraling colored light full of the knowledge and life and love of all times, past, now and tomorrow?

And how can I learn more?

While the old carpet was removed and the new plank floor being placed I was banished to the art room. (So I wouldn't be breathing in dust and sawdust). Oh poor me, .....not! I have had so much fun playing with beads, polymer and paint that I'm not wanting it to come to an end.
What have I been making? Mysterious pod-blossoms, luminescent polymer beads.
Soon the computer/printer/scanner will be hooked back up and I will be able to show you samples. Soon.....I think! Bill still has to re-wire heaters, and replace trim all round. But soon.

Wow! I am suddenly beginning projects, researching others; busy, busy and loving it.
The two brilliant beaded chameleons that were started last fall are being fitted for their background leafy branch neck pieces.

A new little beaded owl wanted to come in to being and what a little character. I crocheted a form first and stuffed it. It looked like a bowling pin. so I put eyes in, that usually helps. Then it looked like a bowling pin with eyes! I didn't give up though and now she looks like a sweet little snowy owl with character.

Somehow my mind wandered back to my OT classes when we learned the basics of many kinds of crafts. One was netting. Yes like the fishermen used to do on the off season, creating and repairing nets. I didn't want a huge fishnet though but some small round containers for stones. I am using wire and netting around a dowel. Need to practice the area where you add a new length of wire. It needs to fit in seamlessly and I haven't got that yet on the first two trials. Three is the charm right?

AND, no, I'm not done, polymer clay earrings in progress. A pattern from an old Jewelry magazine....iridescent colored ink on black clay.

Pain

Are you feeling the pain of the Haitian people? it is so raw it's palpable, a throb of pain and need. It is hard for many of us to part with cash but we can all keep these people in our thoughts and send positive wishes and strength and a vision of recovery and hope.
It must be very difficult to muster up hope when you are living with hunger and thirst among rubble and sewage, struggling to survive when all you knew is lost. Your family is split or gone, your love is torn and divided and you are feeling pains of so many kinds. You wonder if there is any way you can muster up the strength to face the night, to wake to another day. You wonder why?
Send strength to these lost ones. All you can. It could be you.

Befana an annual pleasure

Befana! fun and heartwarming. For twenty women drawn together by fate and the love of our similarities and differences, it is one of the best days of the year.
The original Befana? A generous old Italian woman who rode her broom around the countryside on the eve of January 4th leaving gifts and sweet treats for the children. Sound familiar somehow?
Origins are interesting Often what you think you know is not that way at all. Try a challenge. Take one thing you assume, take for granted and research it's origin. you may be surprised.

new year choices

A new year, new beginnings. Sometimes starting over sounds so positive.

I will be healthy if at all possible by taking special care and not taking anything for
granted.

I'll continue to eat less meat, and dairy, more fresh vegetables, fruits, grains and nuts.
I will be meticulous in my crafting too, remembering to be careful about ventilation when there is even the slightest thought there might be harmful fumes. I will remember protective gloves and masks, and will use them like it or not. I can learn to get used to them right?

I will remember the fear and discomfort of being unable to get a full breath and I will appreciate the air I breathe and give thanks.

Made of polymer clay beads and wire, this is the (first) result of a necklace project that was taught by Christi Friesen at her workshop in Edmonds Washington in August. I've played with it off and on in between working on other projects and decided today to call it done.
It isn't exactly what I planned but my stuff usually surprises me. I'd do some things differently and will, as this is just the first!!
The firefly was first too small and now is too big, and although it lays fairly nicely I would organize the main pieces differently. In fact I did but.... didn't prepare some of the connecting factors well enough. It is finished with a satin finish to which I added some iterference green, blue and gold.

The two day workshop with Christi Friesen was a blast! Whether or not you are interested in polymer clay you would have loved this.
Christie's personality and ability to spread fun is contagious.

But then if you are in to polymer clay at all, you are bound to learn a scad of new ideas and tricks to make your own work better. Christie is thorough and patient, you couldn't ask for a better teacher!

She who would be who she would be

Except for the garden she stands in "She who would be..." is finished.
I wanted a beach comber doll. She refused. I decided with her uptilted head she could be a bird watcher. She refused. She even attempted to self destruct! She upped the heat on the oven and scorched her fingers. (What you see now are prosthesis of sorts.) Before I agreed to the necessary surgery I had my own little tizzy and threw her under the table and tried to ignore her. She pulled on my pants leg, mumbled and grumbled and generally caused so much havoc in the studio I was forced to pull her back up and see what I could do. None of this changed her haughty attitude at all. She thinks she is an aristocrat at least and maybe royalty!
I quit arguing. This is She. She who would be what she would be.

Green Goddess Doll

I was great fun to take this class and learn how she does her amazing work and meet fellow classmates who are interested in making similar creations. There are definitely some things I will do differently on the next one, but all and all I am not too dissatisfied.

The Gaia group's question of the day was "where in your life were you happiest?"
When I was a child I sketched many a picture of a cabin in the woods with deer in the front yard. It was a persistant dream to live in the woods near a creek in a green world.

Later while raising young children and moving often due to being a military family we often found homes in the country on water, so the striving and learning continued.

When the children were grown Bill and I were still young enough to follow our dream, (he now also wanted to try this quiet natural life) we searched and found the perfect place.

I was never happier than when we were on the mountain property, building our home, developing the water and power systems, (we were miles from "conveniences") and living the life. Every summer for 19 years and full time for 7 years we lived an enchanted life.

Now, back in civilization, I cherish those years, the memories of the joys I felt there.

My dream materialized.

I started out to be a beach comber, that is what she thought. I immediately tilted my proud chin to the sky and blew that plan. Me? Poking around on a beach hunting rocks and shells and such trivia? Ha! InaRae thought okay, maybe she is a bird lady, looking to the sky, ready to feed little birds from seed in her basket. Ha! I have handmaidens to do that for me. Birds indeed. I want to wear Royal Purple. I want gold trim and sky symbols on my gown. I want my hair done up like a queens. Indeed! InaRae does have a lot to learn about dolls. Think Christie's class will help? Wink!!

It is art day at the clubhouse where a few of us who love to create go to play on Friday's. Last week someone else needed the clubhouse for a big sale so we've been 2 weeks and I'm anxious to get going. I'm taking acrylics and plan to start a mew picture of the yard with the fish pond from a photo I took last summer. It is sunny and beautiful in the photo and again today.
Could spring be truly thinking about settling in? I so hope.

Little Hummer's beak

I guess figuring out how to make the little guy's beak was my biggest challenge. I wanted to make something that looked right but was not too sharp, as it is to be worn as a pin. Also it needed to be well anchored so it wouldn't slide out, or pull out easily.
I ended up forming polymer clay over an eye pin. I set it into place and anchored it by stitching through the eye over and over until it was holding fast. Hope this solution will be of help to someone else who needs to anchor a beak!

Rainbow Fairy

Partially done fairy, using paint (acrylic fabric paint including irridescent and pearlescent) cotton floss and seed beads. I do not know the name of the artist who did the painting that originally inspired this. I loved the radiant yet soft colors so wnated to see what I could do with it. It changed considerably when I sketched it but I tried to stay true to the colors. Now I am trying to figure out what it will be. I'm not a quilter but think maybe this will be stitched onto a darker background fabric and see what happens from there.

It took my breath away! Laurie told me it was caused by ice crystals and that's right. So much magic in a little ice crystal or two? I promise myself I will examining the moon every night She is visible to see what else she might want to share with me.

There are coronas, pillars, halos and rainbows that she sometimes displays as well as rings.

Times Change

I remember the traditional Thanksgivings where we as kids were bundled up and headed oout to Grandma's house. Not in a sleigh,but packed in the old car. With Items mom baked and is bringing to help out.
Then I remember bundling up my own kids and heading to Granma's house. Tiny beach cottage that it was, it held an amazing amount of family. All five siblings sometimes with their kids and sometimes kid's friends too. Now I'm the grandma, but kids lives are so hectic. Grandpa and I bundle ourselves up and off to the kids house we go!
What's wrong with this picture?
Well nothing I guess, if the point is to get together. Traditions change, with the times. I'm pleased to be flexible

I am enjoying creating magical doors, fairy doors, doors into the otherworld through a stump, a tree a castle wall. Hope you enjoy them as much as I have creating them.

These are fun to make! Bright and colorful, and flashy enough to draw attention.
Habit forming to make. The original pattern was in an early Bead& Button and the design was taught by Alice Korach. I have more to show you soon.
Meanwhile I keep doing outdoor chores while the sun shines. Still picking tomatoes, cutting lettuce and chard. The honeysuckle, nasturtiums, dahlias and zinnias continue to bloom and I don't have the heart to cut them back, (yet.) But a fire in the fireplace, on the other hand, is a blessing!

Autumn thoughts

The last few days have been sunny and warm, indeed very lovely. Autumn making up for a summer that was scant and sparse. never-the-less it's autumness is apparent. I feel the Kore/Demeter aspect grabbing at my soul.

Suddenly two days ago, list be damned, I felt the need to examine and arrange cupboards. Noting duplicates, moving extras to the food and water storage area in the garage. I checked the fruit that I'd recently frozen and moved it to the back of the freezer with 06 and 07's produce to the front.

I remembered the message of mouse ad squirrel and smiled at the vision of their nearly frantic activities with that first hint of frost in the air. It's time to put the gardens to bed, to set up the greenhouse and move the still blooming tomatoes, chilies and eggplant pots to their waiting shelves. I'm getting ready for winter although I am very much a summer person. I feel the need this year, to slow down, to pull with in, to inventory the stack of waiting books, to change to the warmer bedding, replace the tablecloth and chair cushions. Summer is over whether it looks like it or not.

Hummingbird totem

I learned a lot from this little exercise. i made hummingbird for a young friend whose totem at this time is the hummingbird. It is unfortunate that the photo after uploading no longer shows the iridescence n the neck beads.
They are in blue/green/violet and catch the light beautifully. Next time: I will leave lots of room around the square (or circle) of fabric I am working with so that I can use a hoop to stretch the fabric and have edges to turn under and pull to stretch and stitch. In not leaving this allowance it was difficult to pull the fabric taut. I ended up using batting for fill to make the fabric fir better. I do like the way the little wing tip extends beyond the framing circle. The clear beads below the wings indicate the flashing, almost invisible movement.
The painting is 5 1/2" in diameter.

Greenman mixed media

Green man is nearly completed. Unlike lizard which was all beading Green man encompasses paint, ink and fiber as well as beads. I didn't know what I was going to do with him but he guided brush and needle and showed me what he wanted to be. The work is 81/2 x 11 and will be mounted on illustration board and stretched before framing. A matching Maiden is in the works.

Larry Lizard

Larry is 13" long from nose tip to tail crook. And he has been a joy to bead. I still have to make his spinal spurs but this is best done after he is stitched to a jacket or bag or however I decide to complete him.

I first saw an embroidered lizard in a 2002 Bead&Button by Laura Holder. Hers was all green and she'd use a t-shirt transfer to bead over. I sketched Larry out with colored pencils and used the sketch as a color guide. Blues of course. Wonderful cobalt (and other) blues!

With a bag of beach rubble. Small flat round rocks for polymer clay bases, and bits of little drift wood twigs to work beads around. Small kelp "berries" for lack of a better word. I will experiment with them to see if dipping them in liquid pc will make them strong enough to stitch into bead work. NO I certainly didn't have way too many craft items collected already and of ourse I needed a bag or two more. (I wonder if I am going to be able to get my tongue out of my cheek or if it's permanently embedded.)

A-lure-ing fish key chain

This is fun and easy and one of the few things that includes beads that will work for guys.

First find a lure with lovely iridescent colors that you can duplicate with beads. In this case the fish sported turquoise, magenta, cobalt and greens, favorites of mine so it was easy to find match ups.

Next pick up or dismantle and old key chain clip. Now get a nice tough pair of wire cutters to remove the hook. Push the cutters far up into the belly of the fish so no poky wire will protrude. Now the only metal showing is the little loop at the top where you can attach the key chain.

Thread a long needle with Fireline and knot the line. Poke it through from the top near the loop and come out at the belly thread on 10-12 beads and skipping the last bead you put on, come back up through the others and back through the fish belly near where you started. Now repeat and do another fringe of beads until you are happy with the look. Four or five should be about right. This is fun, easy and makes a nice guy gift!

Bracelet Hibiscus

Darla named the previous bracelet. I admit I didn't know what a hibiscus looked like and had to go to Google images to find out. They are lovely and come in a myriad of colors from brilliant to pastel, so actually describe the bracelet very accurately.

Out my dining room window I have some very tall columbine. They came in a wildflower packet I planted last year but seem much larger and more brilliant than the ones I've see in the wild. I had to get Bill's talents going to create a series of three mini-fence-trellis things to support them.

I'm so glad he likes that kind of chore.

Yellow, aqua, blue, magenta and light green, goes with most summer outfits. A really fun bracelet that made itself. (Along with a handful more.) Addictive little guys just keep on coming. Come back often and I'll try to get good pictures up more often.

Not that I am not happy to be getting big therapeutic doses of gardening. And yes, I need them.

Grounding. That's what garden-therapy does for me. In more ways than one.

Wish I could wear gloves. I mean. I do, for some jobs, but not weeding, nor planting, have to have that connection for it all to flow properly!

Colored Wheels choker

This choker has been both fun and a challenge. The original directions from a Bead&Button magazine designed by Erin Robinson, naturally called for specific sizes of beads and a certain type of beading line. Right away I decided to use my stash which meant slightly different sizes of beads and different stringing options. I looked Fireline, and when it wasn't available nearby I bought some fish line of the same weight but found it would not go through my size 12 beading needle. If I used a needle that would accept the thread it would not go through the seed beads. Ack! The next dilemma was finding if I followed the directions closely the wheels looked more like wide cones. Okay I needed to change how many spokes the wheels had in order for the wheel to lay flay. The original pattern also had wheels of the same size whether it was the picot wheel or the accent seel. Mine has 2 different sizes.
Well all this was new to me. I bead but am not practiced at designing or re-designing. But I am learning!
I am anxious to try this same idea again, with more sizes, more colors. I will let you know what happens.

Three Little Fishes

Three little fishes are stonewear focal beads which would look great in a beaded creation using send beads, pearls, shell beads oe aomw "beachy" combination.

Mini-scenic pendant beads

These are little polymer clay scenes. Formed and carved and meant to be used in a beaded pendant. I love making these, usually beginning with several sheets of natural colors of blended clay. Designing right on the clay with a stylus I will sketch trees, rocks, stumps, mountains etc. Then I choose a neutral background color and use a template to cut it into a circle, square or oval.
Next I use a craft knife to carefully cut out each scenic object. After refining edges I place the components onto the template in the order of the background, middle grounds and then foreground or focal point.Then each piece is lifted, brushed with liquid pc (as a glue) and replaced. I may roll lightly with an acrylic rod to assure a good adhesion. These are then baked to cure for 30 minutes. I may finish with Future acrylic floor finish or may buff and leave uncoated.

Just back from a trip to Pittsburgh and a visit with my other family (Husbands kin).
It was quick and fun but the preparation beforehand and catching up after takes hunks out of creative projects, and therefore life!
I have done some polymer pendants and small hangings that I want to show you after some small finishing touches. Soon, soon. Also more beaded bracelets similar to the ones below. They are freeform peyote and freeform embroidery and most fun to make. My style is more loose and design-as-you-go than the rigid patterned, exact style that many beaders prefer. I admire these disciplined works immensely but abandon them soon after mastering a stitch in favor of the looser method as I feel so much less restricted. I know, patience, patience. I'm still working on that.
So back to work and new stuff soon.

Green Goddess of protection necklace

This protection necklace has two faces: one of the green Goddess and one that is a mirror surrounded by beads and stones. When you feel the need for protection wear the mirror side out to reflect back any negativity and the Goddess close to your heart. It is made of polymer clay and stained. The necklace is of seed beads, stones, pearls, and fiber. It was really a fun one to make.

Native Maiden Pendant Focal Bead

I remembered a drawing I'd done of a beautiful African maiden and wanted to see how she would look as a focal pendant. here is the result. I made three, each similar but each also very different in color tone, background mat and background piece.
I drew the design onto a blended piece of polymer clay (black, a touch of red and a tiny bit of iridescent gold)using a ball stylus. Then I carved into the clay where I wanted deeper impressions, and carefully removed bits of excess clay. When I was happy with this stage I baked the pendant. When it had cooled I used irridescent powders to highlight certain areas. The eyes weere emphasized with polymer inks. The design was placed on the tore, carved, textured background pieces and baked again.

What if you had a useful planning tool as your designated place to store and organize all those “sparks” of inspiration?

A Different Kind of Planner

The Sparkbook is different from your typical planner because it not only helps you determine all those actions you want to take for the upcoming year, it helps you visualize these things.

By collecting sketches, magazine cutouts, photographs and bits of memorabilia from daily life along with key words, phrases and poetry, you can create a great reference for inspiration and empowerment.

Your Book

To make your own Sparkbook, designate a blank notebook or binder you have handy. Choose something that you know you’ll enjoy using and fits with your personal organization preferences.

Here are a few great examples of books to use:

3-ring binder with blank or lined paper
Small photo book (without the protective sheet covers)
Scrapbook (4”x 6” or 12”x 14”)
Sketch pad
Notebook

Next, you’ll want to figure out how you want to organize the book you choose. Adding tabs is an easy and clear way to keep your ideas, inspirations and plans in their own special categories. Here are a few thought-starters for possible tabbed sections, but feel free to add other categories or sections that are important and helpful to you.

Tab Section Ideas:

Home goals: Home décor and organization projects you’d like to accomplish.
Cooking/Entertaining: Recipes and dinner party ideas you want to remember.
Family: Activities and goals you’d like to achieve with your family.
Personal/wellness goals: Your health, spirit and personal thoughts.
Financial goals: Saving, budgeting and planning.
Travel /R&R: Places you’d like to visit in the next 12 months.
Career: Goals, plans and personal encouragement related to work.
You can also use these ideas as inspiration to create your own tabs if your book doesn’t already have them.

Creating Tabs:

Cut out swatches of fabric you enjoy and glue them to the sides of your pages. Write your section names on the swatches with a fabric marker.
Use color-coded rubber bands: section off and wrap rubber bands around each category.
Insert binder dividers with tabs, available at your local office supply store, to create sections.
Use colorful sticky notes and write sections names on a different color for each category.
Create your own bookmarks using ribbon and color code for each section for easy reference.
As you come across the inspirational and empowering sparks in your life, simply insert them into your sections as you see fit. Keep your journal somewhere handy, like on a bedside table to review and add to it throughout the year.

Create Your Own Organization

Creating fabric tabs and creative heading pages for your Sparkbook will help you organize and reference the things that ‘spark’ inspiration in your life.

Fabric Tabs

MATERIALS
Rectangles of fabric (4” x 1-1/4”)
Spray starch – heavy
Warm iron
Glue stick or double-sided tape
Scissors
Construction or scrapbooking paper
Permanent marker or fabric marker

INSTRUCTIONS

Cut enough fabric tabs (4” x 1-1/4” size) as needed for the categories you will have in your Sparkbook.
Fold each rectangle perfectly in half to create the finished size of 2”x 1-1/4”.
To make fabric sturdier, spray folded rectangle with heavy starch and press with a warm iron.
With your glue stick or double-sided tape, stick insides of rectangles together, leaving the last 1/4” of fabric unglued. This will be the portion of the fabric that attaches to your book pages.

Writing on Tabs:

Write category headings onto construction or scrapbooking paper that has been cut into pieces small enough to be glued to swatches to achieve the look as pictured.
Or write category headings directly onto fabric with a fabric marker.
Attaching Tabs:

Divide out the number of sections you want your book to have. (It’s easiest to have the tabbed pages be made up of 3 sheets glued together, with the center sheet being the one the tab is attached to.)
Use a glue stick to apply glue to the remaining 1/4” of the insides of your fabric tab. Attach to the edge of middle sheet of the three that will be glued together to make your ‘section-heading page’.
Once the tab dries, glue the back of the first of the three pages you’ve designated to the center sheet (which is now tabbed). Then apply glue to the front of the third sheet you’ve designated to the tabbed sheet as well. This will give you a sturdy ‘section heading page’ and will create a little more division between sections.
Follow the same process for each tab, moving the tabs down the right side of your book, alternating colors as you go.
Heading Pages

Now that your tabs are in order, you can personalize your heading pages. Heading pages can be as simple as just writing down the name of the section at the top of the page or as creative as adding imagery and phrases that will inspire you to fill up the pages of each section.

To add the inspiration pages, draw pictures or cut out words and imagery from magazines that speak to you. Add personal photographs and bits of memorabilia from your daily life and combine with key words or poetry to reference throughout the coming year.

Spin-N-Bead with bent-tip Big Eye needle

Jeweler’s Cement

Instructions
Finished Size= 26” with dangles
Note: Use the Spin-n-Bead to string seed bead sections. When threading back through beads to create the beaded dangles, use a straight flexible beading needle. You’ll have lots of leftover beads but it’s easiest to string beads quickly when the the Spin-N-Bead is full.
Cut the thread into three equal lengths and attach a stopper bead 3” from the end of each thread.
First strand: string 6” of seed beads. Pass the needle through a CZ-Gem Dropz and back through 2 ½” of seed beads. String 4” of seed beads. Pass the needle through a CZ-Gem Dropz and back through 2 1/2” of seed beads; repeat five more times. String 3 ½” of seed beads and a stopper bead.
Second strand: string 7” of seed beads. Pass the needle through a CZ-Gem Dropz and back through 1 ½” of seed beads. String 3” of seed beads. Pass the needle through a CZ-Gem Dropz and back through 1 ½” of seed beads, repeat three more times. String 5 ½” of seed beads.
Third strand: string 7” of seed beads. Pass the needle through a CZ-Gem Dropz and back through 4” of seed beads; repeat four more times. String 3” of seed beads.
Cut the ColourCraft wire length in half.
Make a wrapped loop on one end of the wire.
Remove the stopper beads from one end of each beaded thread and tie them to the wrapped wire loop. Place a drop of jeweler’s cement on the knot and cut off any extra threads.
Place the wire end through the wide end of the beading cone and make another wrapped loop on the other side of the cone to attach half of the clasp.
Repeat Steps 6-8 for the other end of the necklace.

I Love Tools, Digital Picture Frame

For Christmas my husband gave me a digital picture frame. Not only will this be wonderful to have displayed in our home but his suggestion was to use it at trunk shows also. Genius! I had not even thought of that, but once the idea was planted I knew I wanted to share it with our Art Bead Scene readers.

My plan is to use a separate memory card that I can load my bead pictures onto - keeping just family pictures stored on the actual device. Then when I do a trunk show I can just pop that card in - ready to go instantly. I'm thinking this will be an effective marketing tool for a variety of reasons. First, having a great deal of printed pictures displayed starts to get visually cluttered and distracting. Second, the lighted digital display can show off important small details without having to worry about room lighting or glare. Third, the time difference it will take to set up that one frame vs. about 30 pictures is huge and time is always an issue with me. Finally, just the novelty of it will get people to stop and look.

I think that I'll have photo album of some sort nearby so people can then go directly to the picture they'd like to see. I can pause my digital photo frame, but I don't think I'd want just anyone playing around with the buttons. I'll still display a few prominent pictures around the area, but not so many smaller / easy to overlook ones.

Dr Eddie is an artist, a digital artist and an instructor of digital art at Eclectic Academy.(http://www.eclecticacademy.com/).
He created this seascape in Painter a wonderful realistic program that allows you to create digitally just as though you were working with the natural media.
The dream-like quality he achieved here was accomplished by simply going with the media, in a sense letting the painting create itself.
I find it both exciting, and thought-provoking, natural and mystical. I knew you all would like to see it and so I share.
